The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter

Moderator---Kathy

The story opens 28 years in the past where you meet two sisters, Samantha and Charlotte Quinn, simply known as Sam and Charlie.  They are the only children of Gamma and Rusty and are living in an old farmhouse since an arsonist burned the family home to the ground.  Rusty is a defense lawyer in Northern Georgia and has made lots of enemies.  It was most likely a person who harbored hate for Rusty due to someone he represented that torched the home.  And there is no shortage of enemies when it comes to Rusty Quinn.  Two more show up at the farmhouse looking for him but only the girls and their mother are at home.  The mother and daughters end up being the fodder for the missing father.  This is where the horror begins.

When the story picks up again, we learn the fates of the daughters and watch Charlie being dragged into a school shooting just by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  We follow the young school shooter as Rusty represents her.  Both daughters are lawyers and even Sam, who had become estranged from her father and sister, visits from New York to help with the case.

Published in 2017, the book fills in the time warp from 28 years ago to present.  You get to know each character well, understand their personality and know what drives them.  The twists, turns and surprises are ongoing.  You are continually being fed new information to give you a more complete picture of the past and the present.  You meet many supporting characters and get to know them and how they fit in with the Quinn family.  Northern Georgia makes an ideal setting for the story.
