Secret Book Exchange

Out with 2009 -- in with 2010

Since we would not be meeting again this December, we decided on a 'Secret Santa' type borrowed-book exchange. All members were to submit a book they had read in the past and kept as part of their permanent library. When we first started the book club, we had agreed that we would not read books one or more of us had already read. This was to be our chance to put in a book we were fond of and get someone else's feedback. Plus, it was also a way of finding out how well we knew each other's reading habits based on the books submitted. Using a third person monitor, we handed our wrapped books to that person who numbered them and made sure we did not select our own. We brought a book and took home another. All of us would literally be on a different page this time around. In January, we would return with the books, again wrapped, and see if we really knew what each other liked to read.

The rules were simple:
100% attendance at January meeting by members
No one could mention the book they picked to another member
No one could mention the book they submitted to another member
It had to be a memorable book already read by member

The rules were simple and all of them simply broken--including something unforeseen-- members showing up with copies of the books they submitted and placing them in plain view. Oh well.

It was still a lively and fun night. Six books bring about plenty of discussion and that is just what happened. Plus, it was salad bar, pizza and cake night. A good evening indeed!
