The Dinner by Herman Koch

Moderator---Dee Dee

Meet Paul Lohman.  He will be your guide for the evening.  It begins in a fancy unnamed restaurant in Amsterdam.  The courses go from the Apertif to the Digestif.  But, as the reader soon discovers, this is NOT a restaurant review.  It is a family dinner with Paul and his brother Serge and their wives.  Families have problems and the Lohman's are no exception.  Their problems, though, are exceptional.

If you are looking for a feel-good story with likeable characters and everything coming together neatly on the last page, you might as well find something else to read.  This is not it.  This novel is messy.  It's dark with lots of unexpected turns and a moral dilemma that desperately needs a decision.  The book has an original feel about it.  From the food to the family--expect the unexpected.

Author Herman Koch is both a writer and an actor.  He is best known in his native Holland for his role in a hit T.V. series.  The Dinner has been translated  into 21 languages.  The book has been both a Dutch play and a movie (Italian) released in 2013.
