Deenie by Judy Blume

Moderator---Judy

Meet Deenie Fenner, a 13 year old girl from Elizabeth, New Jersey.  She was named after a character in a movie and her mother has high hopes of Deenie becoming a top model.  She tries out for the cheerleading squad at school and doesn't make it.  At the tryouts, Deenie's gym teacher notices something wrong with her posture.  She is diagnosed with scoliosis after a trip to a specialist.

The book tells the story of how scoliosis is treated and you follow Deenie through her journey starting with the body molds and the eventual brace that encumbers movement.  Along the way, she gains compassion for others and grows as a person.  Deenie finds out that 3 is a crowd when it comes to boys and that sometimes, obeying a parent is the right thing to do even when it is something she could get away with.

(From our Banned Book Series)

The book ranks 46th on the American Library Association list of Most Frequently Challenged Books. What is found objectionable is it talks about masturbation, menstruation and sexuality. Peoria Illinois had banned it then restored it to the school libraries with restrictions to older students or younger students with parents permission to read it. As recently as 2004, some schools in Florida tried to remove it from the library shelves.

Bans/Challenges???

"I don't think it should have been banned or challenged
for Junior High School age children." --Judy

"The overlying message's importance overshadows the
infrequent references to masturbation.  Okay for
Junior High." --Kim
