Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi

Moderator---Shellie

A well blended mix of fairy tale, fantasy, fiction and the fifties makes this oddly named novel an interesting read.  And, boy, it has surprise twists and turns that you might not see coming.

The story begins with a young woman, Boy Novak, running away from her abusive, sinister father who she refers to as the 'rat catcher'.  She leaves New York by bus and ends up in a small community in Massachusetts.  The year is 1953 and she gets her chance to control and shape her own life.  She becomes a wife, stepmother, mother, friend and valued employee. But Boy's life hits a major snag she didn't see coming. Her relationship with her stepdaughter Snow takes a dramatic turn after the birth of her own daughter Bird.  Boy distances herself from Snow in both feelings and miles. Bird is left to miss the sister she has never known.

But the story doesn't end there...

Born in 1984 in Nigeria, Author Helen Oyeyemi was raised in England.  She started writing her first novel while still in high school and it was published while she was a student at Cambridge.  She currently has written a total of five well-reviewed novels.
