This 1999 novel was an Oprah book club pick.  The story centers around a mother and daughter, Ingrid and Astrid.  The mother is a narcissistic poet and the daughter adores her.  Ingrid murders a lover who rejected her and Astrid is left to the foster care system.  The book captures Astrid's change as she comes to see the life around her for what it is.  This includes her mother.
