If you have not read any Anne Perry books from her crime series featuring Thomas and Charlotte Pitt--don't worry. This book is the 28th novel in the series that started in 1979. You don't have to know all the ins and outs of the characters in order to understand them. There is enough background spread throughout the book that they are easy to follow.
Murder is still on the menu in the novel but another crime has been added. The setting is late-Victorian London and the upper crust are not only reeling from a murder, now whispers of rape becomes part of the plot. As the mystery unfolds, a look at rape in that era reveals how the shame is often on the woman and how hard it is to prove and prosecute.
