The first two sentences in the book tells you what the story is about--a bank robbery and murder. You know what is ahead of you. Fifteen year old Dell is the narrator and the year is 1960. His parents rob a bank and his life, and the life of his twin sister Berner, is forever changed. Author Richard Ford, in real life, lost his father around the same time and at the same age as the book's narrator. Immediately following their parents' arrest, Berner chooses to run off on her own while Dell is taken to Canada and that is where murder comes in. The novel is heavy on foreshadowing and light on the follow-up adult life of Dell. It has a very real 'in the moment' feel about it. Books, like life, don't always turn out neat and tidy.
