Tom Sherbourne, WWI hero from Australia, has decided to spend his post-military life as a lighthouse keeper. He ends up tending the Janus Light off Point Partaguese located in the south-western corner of the country. The small island of Janus Rock sits between the Indian Ocean and the Great Southern Ocean and the lighthouse provides protection for as far as 30 miles out.
While in Partaguese prior to beginning his work on Janus Rock, Tom meets Isabel Graysmark. First comes love, then comes marriage, but a wee one never fills the baby carriage. It becomes their biggest heartbreak. Then, shortly after losing yet another baby, a small boat washes up on shore. Inside is a dead man and a very much alive baby girl. There is no identification, just the clothes they are wearing and a baby rattle. Isabel wants to keep the baby, raise her as their own, and not let on to anyone that the baby wasn't born to them. Tom goes along with her wishes.
And that is how they finally begin their life as a family. When Tom takes a scheduled leave from his lighthouse job, the family of 3 returns to Partaguese for Lucy, who is now a toddler, to be baptized. While there, Tom and Isabel hear about a tragedy in town that involved a woman whose husband fled a mob of anti-German townspeople by jumping into a small boat with the couple's baby daughter. The husband, the baby and the boat were never seen again. Tom and Isabel know the rest of the story. Tom is guilt-ridden. Isabel wants to just keep going on as they have been--- a family of 3. That, of course, can't happen.
The book was made into a movie in 2016. It came out on DVD in January of 2017. The movie follows the book closely. You recognize all the characters, the dialog, the emotions, and the feel of isolation on Janus Rock. Great follow-up to the book.
