Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight

Moderator---Dee Dee

This 2013 debut mystery novel by Kimberly McCreight is centered around the suicide of a 15 year old girl and the grief and hopelessness her mother Kate feels.  It also is full of subplots including online communications with a stranger, bullying, sexuality, a tell-all school blog, hazing, texting, the mother/daughter relationship---and secrets.  And everyone has a secret.  And it is those secrets that are at the core of the story.

Amelia attends a private school in Brooklyn.  She's a great student with a BFF named Sylvia.  The two stick together and are not part of the popular crowd.  That all changes when Amelia is selected to join the Magpies, a secret school group of girls complete with hazing pranks.  Amelia keeps this from her best friend and also from her single mother.  Amelia adds yet another secret she is keeping from those she is closest to---she has found her first love.  Though Amelia doesn't tell her Kate or Sylvia what is going on in her life, she confides in an online stranger who has sought her out.

And Amelia isn't the only one with secrets.  Her mother has given her a sketchy story of her father.  So who's her daddy?  What is the real reason she is asked to join the Magpies since she isn't especially liked by those girls?  Who is behind the secret blog that dishes the 'dirt' on the students?  Who is her new online friend that she has yet to meet?  And, the biggest question of all, did Amelia really commit suicide?

Reconstructing Amelia was Entertainment Weekly's Favorite Book of the Year.  It was nominated for an Edgar Award for Best First Novel.  Nicole Kidman bought the rights to the book and is producing an HBO movie based on the novel which stars her as the mother, Kate.
