Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Moderator---Kim

Eleanor Oliphant is many things but normal is not one of them.  She's awkward, strange, damaged, quirky, socially inept and seems to have no filter when talking with others.  Yet, she still manages, despite the odds, to hold the interest of a few people.  She is hired on the spot at a graphic design company despite the fact she has a black eye, broken arm and missing teeth at her interview.  Both a co-worker from the IT department and a man in need of help find her worth their time.  But, in Eleanor's unrealistic world, she pursues a singer she has seen once on a stage who doesn't know she exists.

If you've read The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, you will notice many similarities.  Both stories are set in the UK.  Both main characters are loners with mommy issues.  Both have had physically abusive men in their lives yet still go for someone who would not necessarily be interested in them.  Both have disheveled appearances and both drink too much and do it alone.

The mommy issues for Eleanor is the crux of her many problems. Raymond, her IT friend from work and Sammy, an elderly man she helped Raymond rescue, become part of her life and see something in Eleanor that others can't or won't see.  You will find her a memorable character who is unique and definitely one of a kind. And really, Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine.
