The novel is full of quirky but likeable characters who set out to break a 500 yr. old code. The code at the center of the story dates back to a very real publisher, Aldus Manutius, who introduced the world to italic in his printing business. The oddness of the bookstore is what peaks the curiosity of the main character. It also sparks the interest of those he tells about the strange store. Google employees along with a special effects artist, an Internet pirate, bookstore employees and even Mr. Penumbra band together to figure out the secret code. 'Festina lente' readers!
