Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

Moderator---Kathy

The story starts with a murder investigation.  Before one starts wondering 'who done it', the reader has to find out who got 'done in'.  And the mystery begins at the Pirriwee Public School on parents' trivia night with an "Audrey and Elvis" costume theme.

First things first--we meet the main characters, three women, and learn their back stories.  Madeline is a strong and loyal woman who could be your best friend or your worst enemy.  Celeste is both very rich and very beautiful and also warm and likeable.  Filling out the trio is Jane.  She is a young single mom, new to the community, who Madeline and Celeste befriend.  All three have children starting kindergarten at Pirriwee.   An incident that involves a kindergarten child during orientation bonds the three women.

There are several other characters in the novel.  Madeline's ex has a daughter with his new wife Bonnie who is starting school with Madeline's daughter.   There are other parents, faculty, locals, siblings and the fathers of the children.  And there is Renata, a rich business woman with a gifted daughter who, too, is starting kindergarten.

The book peels back all the layers that the characters hide behind, the lies they tell themselves, and the secrets they hide. Spousal abuse and bullying are two of the themes in the story.

HBO has turned the book into a miniseries produced by Nicole Kidman who plays Celeste.  Madeline is played by Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley is Jane.  It received 16 Emmy nominations (2017), won 8 awards including  'Outstanding Limited Series' and three of the cast members walked off with individual  emmys. The show could enjoy a second season if Liane Moriarty is willing to write it.
