Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Moderator---Dee Dee

The story setting is a steamy Caribbean port city.  It spans 50 years--from the late 1880s to the 1920s.  There are 3 main characters in a love triangle.  Florentino Ariza falls madly in love with the girl.  Dr. Juvenal Urbino marries the girl.  Fermina Daza IS the girl.  But love takes time.  It can grow over decades of marriage.  Or, it could show up if one waits long enough--like for 51 years, 9 months and 4 days.

A beautiful story, rich with symbolism, details, and a feeling for era.  This novel joins the dangers of cholera outbreaks and love sickness as both being plagues.  Flowers, birds and rain enter the story as love, danger and temptation, and also as critical turns of events.

The late Gabriel Garcia Marquez is considered the most popular Spanish-language writer of his day.  He was embraced by both critics and readers.  His literary genre is known as magic realism.
