Prayers for the Stolen by Jennifer Clement

Moderator---Shellie

Acapulco was once the playground for Hollywood's elite.  It's Mexico's oldest beach resort-- sitting on the Pacific.   The setting for this novel takes place in the nearby mountains and spills over into Acapulco.  Young girls are prey to the drug cartels that have taken over the area and other parts of the country.  Two things mothers don't want are pretty daughters or seeing black Escalades driving near their homes.

This is the story of Ladydi Garcia Martinez.  (And yes, she was named after the late Princess.)  Her mother told everyone she was a boy until it was obvious she wasn't.  After that, to save her from kidnapping, she had to be made ugly.  Charcoal on the skin and markers on the teeth helped.   Fathers had moved on and it was up to the mothers to protect their daughters.

Today's Mexico, its flaws and corruption, are part of the story.  Ladydi's journey gives the reader a glimpse into a country overrun with drug cartels.  The author, Jennifer Clement, lives in Mexico and has followed this problem for some time.  There are eye-opening moments in the book as well as light-hearted banter and complex characters.  Neither Acapulco nor Mexico itself has weathered the drug wars well.
